Monteverde is a cloud forest region high in the mountains of north-west Costa Rica, and the village of Santa Elena is its hub for places to stay, eat and book tours. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve lies about 5.5 km from the village.
The reserves
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve opens every day from 7:30 am to 4 pm, with guided night walks after dark. The smaller Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve opens every day from 7 am to 4 pm.
The road up
The roads up to Monteverde are partly rough. A car with high clearance helps in the dry season, and a 4x4 is best in the rainy season.
From La Fortuna
The jeep-boat-jeep crosses Lake Arenal by boat and then climbs by road to Santa Elena, in three to four hours in all.
Good to know
- Cool and wet. The cloud forest is cooler and damper than the lowlands: bring a warm layer and a rain jacket.
- Emergencies. Call 911, the national number for police, fire and ambulance.
