What Mi Tigo actually is
Mi Tigo is Tigo Colombia's customer app for its prepaid and postpaid mobile lines. You use it to top up, check balance, buy data packages and manage the line. It is not a travel eSIM product, and it is not sold to visitors as a standalone data plan. To use it, you need a Tigo Colombia SIM or eSIM tied to a Colombian number, and registering that line normally means showing a local identity document (cédula or foreigner ID) in a Tigo shop.
That is the gap most travellers hit. The app is genuinely useful — if you already have a Tigo line. If you land at El Dorado with a suitcase and no Colombian ID, it is not the shortcut it looks like.
Who Mi Tigo is for (and who it is not for)
| Situation | Mi Tigo a good fit? | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| You live in Colombia or hold a cédula / foreigner ID | Yes — it manages your existing Tigo line | Keep using it |
| You are on a short holiday (1–3 weeks) | No — registration and shop time are not worth it | Buy a Colombia travel eSIM before you fly |
| You are a digital nomad staying months | Sometimes — a local line can make sense later | Start with a travel eSIM, add a local line if you need a Colombian number |
| You need a Colombian phone number for local services | Possibly — but only with a registered local line | Check whether the service accepts a foreign number first |
If your goal is simply “I want data when I land in Bogotá, Medellín or Cartagena”, the answer is a travel eSIM, not Mi Tigo.
Why a travel eSIM is the simpler route for a Colombia trip
A travel eSIM is a data plan you install on your phone before you travel. You scan a QR code, the plan sits quietly on your device, and you switch it on when you land. There is no shop queue, no plastic SIM, no contract and no local ID.
For Colombia specifically, that matters because arrival days are busy. El Dorado is one of the busiest airports in Latin America, and the last thing most people want after a long flight is a hunt for a phone shop. If you want the arrival-day detail, our guide to Bogotá airport (BOG) walks through what happens when you land, and the same logic applies at Medellín (MDE) and Cartagena (CTG).
A travel eSIM also keeps your normal number active for WhatsApp and bank codes, because it runs alongside your home SIM rather than replacing it. That is the single biggest practical difference from buying a local line.
What the Colombia eSIM covers
The Colombia eSIM from eSIM Americas is built for visitors: data in Colombia, activated when you land, with installation and activation guides in the help centre. You install it before departure, then switch it on after you clear immigration.
Before you buy, check your phone. Most recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models and Google Pixels support eSIM, but not every handset does, and some carrier-locked phones will not accept a travel eSIM at all. Our one-minute phone check tells you whether your device is ready.
If you are comparing local carriers out of curiosity, we have a separate piece on Movistar in Colombia — useful background, but not required reading before you buy a travel eSIM.
Step by step: getting online in Colombia without Mi Tigo
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
- Buy the Colombia eSIM from the Colombia store before you fly.
- Install it at home, on Wi-Fi, while you still have a reliable connection.
- Switch it on after landing — follow the activation guide if the data does not connect immediately.
- Keep your home SIM on for calls and messages; use the eSIM for data.
If something does not work, the help centre covers installation, activation and the usual troubleshooting steps. Lost your QR code? That is covered in the help centre too — order links arrive by email, so check your inbox and spam folder first.
When a local Tigo line might still make sense
There are cases where a Colombian number is genuinely useful: long stays, local bank accounts, delivery apps that require a local number, or a job that needs a Colombian line. In those cases, visiting a Tigo shop with your passport and foreigner ID (if you have one) is the normal route, and Mi Tigo becomes the app you use afterwards.
For a two-week holiday, that is a lot of admin for very little gain. A travel eSIM covers maps, messaging, ride-hailing, restaurant bookings and translation — which is what most trips actually need.
Multi-country trips
If Colombia is one stop on a longer route, two options are worth knowing. The South America eSIM covers a multi-country itinerary across the continent, and our guide to crossing borders in South America explains how to stay online when you move between countries. If your trip also touches the USA, Canada or Mexico, the North America plan is the one to look at — note that Mexico is covered through that roaming plan, not through a Mexico-only eSIM.
The short version
Mi Tigo is a tool for people who already have a Tigo Colombia line. Visitors do not need it. Buy a Colombia travel eSIM before you fly, install it on Wi-Fi, and switch it on when you land in Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena or anywhere else on your route.
