Claro in Colombia, in plain terms
Claro is a major mobile network in Colombia, alongside Movistar and others. When people search for an eSIM Claro Colombia, they usually mean one of two things: a Claro-branded eSIM bought locally, or a travel eSIM that will keep them connected on Colombian networks. For a short trip, the second option is the one that saves the most time.
A local Claro SIM or eSIM typically involves a shop visit, ID checks and a Spanish-language sign-up. A travel eSIM skips that. You install it before departure, and it activates when you land.
If you want to compare the local network angle, our guide to Movistar in Colombia covers the other main operator. For Brazil, there is a separate piece on Claro in Brazil if your trip crosses the border.
What to check before you buy
Not every phone takes an eSIM. It takes about a minute to check:
- Dial *#06# and look for an EID number. If you see one, your phone is eSIM-capable.
- Check your phone is carrier-unlocked.
- Make sure you have a stable internet connection to install the eSIM before you fly.
Our phone compatibility guide walks through this step by step. If your phone is not eSIM-ready, a physical SIM remains the fallback.
Why a travel eSIM beats a local Claro SIM for most trips
| Travel eSIM (Colombia) | Local Claro SIM/eSIM | |
|---|---|---|
| Where to buy | Online, before you fly | Claro shop in Colombia |
| ID needed | No | Yes, usually passport |
| Language | Your language | Usually Spanish |
| Setup time | Minutes, at home | Queue + paperwork on arrival |
| Best for | Short trips, multi-stop itineraries | Long stays, local number needed |
If you need a Colombian phone number for long-term use, a local Claro plan may suit you. For a holiday or a two-week trip, a travel eSIM is simpler.
Where you will actually use it
Colombia's main tourist routes are well covered by mobile networks. That includes:
- Bogotá — arriving at El Dorado is covered in our Bogotá airport guide.
- Medellín — see the Medellín airport guide and the city piece on the metro, Comuna 13 and Guatapé.
- Cartagena — the Cartagena airport guide and the walled city and Rosario Islands piece cover the Caribbean coast.
- Coffee region — Salento, Cocora and the coffee towns are covered in our coffee region guide.
Coverage is strongest in cities and on main roads. In remote areas, expect gaps, as you would anywhere.
If your trip continues beyond Colombia
Colombia sits on several popular multi-country routes. If you are crossing into Ecuador, Peru or further south, a regional plan can be simpler than buying a new eSIM at each border. Our South America eSIM page explains the multi-country option, and the crossing borders guide covers the practical side.
For a Colombia-only trip, the single-country plan is the right buy.
How to install and activate
- Buy the Colombia eSIM from the Colombia store.
- Install it while you still have home Wi-Fi — our install guide covers this.
- When you land, switch the eSIM on and enable data roaming for that line — see the activation guide.
- If it does not connect, the not connecting guide has the fixes.
Keep your home SIM active for calls and texts if you need them, and set the eSIM as your data line.
What it costs and what you get
Pricing and data bundles are listed live in the Colombia store, so check there for the current options. The plan is a data eSIM for travellers: you get connectivity on arrival without a shop visit, and you can top up or manage it from your account.
If you lose your order email or QR code, the help centre explains what to do. There is no public order lookup page — per-order links arrive by email.
A quick decision checklist
- Staying in Colombia only? Buy the Colombia eSIM.
- Crossing into other South American countries? Consider the South America plan.
- Heading to the USA, Canada or Mexico as well? The North America plan may fit better.
- Phone not eSIM-ready? Check the compatibility guide first.
The bottom line
For most travellers to Colombia, a travel eSIM is the fastest way to get online. Claro is one of the networks you may connect to, but you do not need a Claro-branded plan to use it. Buy the Colombia eSIM before you fly, install it at home, and switch it on when you land.
