AT&T at a glance
5G for 322 million
AT&T's annual report for 2025 says that at the end of that year its 5G covered more than 322 million people in the United States and North America, and its 4G LTE covered all major metropolitan areas and more than 337 million people.
The FCC's coverage map
The FCC's National Broadband Map shows each carrier's mobile coverage by technology and by minimum speed: 4G LTE at 5/1 Mbps and 5G-NR at 35/3 Mbps. The carriers file the data twice a year, as of 30 June and 31 December, and the map is built from prediction models, so the carrier's own map can differ.
A phone for calls
Calls on AT&T run over HD Voice, the carrier's name for VoLTE. AT&T lists three requirements: an HD Voice coverage area, an HD Voice-capable smartphone and the HD Voice SIM card, which is UICC-G or newer.

Check your phone first
A plan on AT&T needs a phone that takes an eSIM and is unlocked, not tied to the carrier that sold it. The phone check tells you whether yours does.
Good to know
How your eSIM works on this trip, and where to find help.
AT&T is one of the three national carriers of the United States, and the network the eSIM Americas USA eSIM uses.
How far AT&T’s network reaches
AT&T’s annual report for 2025 gives its coverage as of 31 December 2025: the 4G LTE network reaches all major metropolitan areas and more than 337 million people in the United States, and the 5G network more than 322 million. The carrier sells its mid-band 5G as 5G+, and its support pages say that layer appears in specific cities and needs a phone with band n77; the high-band layer needs band n260.
Check the signal on the FCC’s map
The FCC’s National Broadband Map draws each carrier’s mobile coverage from the carriers’ own filings, layer by technology and by minimum speed: 4G LTE at 5 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up, 5G-NR at 35 and 3. The carriers report twice a year, with data as of 30 June and 31 December. The map comes from prediction models and shows outdoor service, so a mountain valley or a national park can fall in a grey area; AT&T’s own map is the second view to compare.
A phone that works on AT&T
AT&T’s calls run on HD Voice, its name for VoLTE. The requirements on its support page are an HD Voice coverage area, an HD Voice-capable phone and the SIM card that came with it, of the grade UICC-G or newer. A phone without VoLTE cannot make calls on this network, so check the model before you fly.
Before you land
Load the eSIM on Wi-Fi at home, then turn its line on after you land in New York, Los Angeles or Miami.
