Short answer
Cancún International Airport (CUN) lies less than 10 km southwest of the Hotel Zone, and ADO buses leave from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 for downtown Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Every foreign tourist in Quintana Roo, children included, pays the state’s VISITAX fee online.

Cancún International Airport (CUN), run by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), lies less than 10 km southwest of Cancún’s Hotel Zone. It is the way in to the whole Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo, from Cancún to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Check your ticket for your terminal: Terminal 3 handles international flights only.

Before you land

At immigration, an officer stamps your passport with the number of days you may stay, or an E-gate kiosk scans it and prints a receipt with those days. Either way, you then get the digital immigration form (FMMd): scan the QR code at the immigration desks or open the INM portal, download the form and keep a copy.

VISITAX. Quintana Roo charges every foreign tourist a visitor fee, children and babies included. Pay it online at visitax.gob.mx; with your passport number you can recover the receipt later.

Is there still a paper immigration form?

No. An officer stamps your passport, or an E-gate kiosk prints a receipt with your days of stay, and you download the digital form (FMMd) from the QR code at immigration or on the INM portal.

Do I have to pay VISITAX?

Yes, if you visit Quintana Roo as a foreign tourist: it is the state’s visitor fee, for children and babies too, paid online at visitax.gob.mx.

Getting online

Adding an eSIM from a QR code needs a connection, so add yours before you fly (install the eSIM). The Mexico eSIM roams on a Mexican partner network: after landing, turn its line on and turn on data roaming for that line only (switch it on after landing).

From the airport

ADO buses. ADO buses stop at Terminals 2, 3 and 4 and run to downtown Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Buy tickets online, in the ADO app or at the counter.

Taxis. The taxi desks are in Terminals 2 and 3. Take only officially marked taxis, and if you want to pay by card, book and pay inside the terminal or at the taxi rank when your car is assigned.

Tren Maya. The Cancún Aeropuerto station opened next to the airport in December 2023, and a free shuttle bus links it with the terminals. Trains run from there to Playa del Carmen and Tulum; tickets are sold on the official booking site.

How do I get from Cancún airport to Tulum?

ADO buses leave from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 for Playa del Carmen and Tulum. A free shuttle bus also takes you to the Tren Maya station next to the airport, with trains to both.
