An eSIM needs a phone that takes one and is unlocked, not tied to the carrier that sold it. The phone check tells you whether yours does.

How your eSIM works on this trip, and where to find help.

The figures here come from ASEP, Panama’s utilities regulator, from the annual report Liberty Latin America filed for 2025, from +Móvil’s own pages and from the trade press, each with its date.

Who owns +Móvil?

+Móvil is the name under which Cable & Wireless Panamá, S.A. sells its services. Its own page sets out three owners: Cable & Wireless Cala Holdings Limited, a Liberty Latin America subsidiary, with 49%; the Government of the Republic of Panama with 49%; and a trust for the staff with 2%. Liberty Latin America’s report for 2025 adds that the government has the right to appoint members of the board.

How Claro Panamá became part of +Móvil

Cable & Wireless Panamá completed its purchase of Claro Panamá on 1 July 2022. In October 2022 the company said the two brands now shared one network. A resolution from Acodeco kept their stores, customer service, marketing and sales forces apart until 16 January 2023. In February 2023 TeleSemana reported that the Claro brand would end in Panama and everything would become +Móvil, step by step. In June 2026 the same publication counted two mobile operators in the country, down from four, and in May 2026 ASEP approved a public tender to bring in a third.

The combined company holds 125 MHz of spectrum, by Liberty Latin America’s 2025 report: 30 MHz at 700 MHz, 40 MHz at 1900 MHz, 30 MHz in the AWS band and 25 MHz at 850 MHz. Before the deal, C&W Panama held 65 MHz and Claro Panamá 60 MHz. The mobile concession runs until 2037.

4G and 5G on +Móvil

Cable & Wireless Panamá announced 4G LTE on the 700 MHz band in March 2015, starting with Casco Viejo, Bella Vista and Costa del Este in the capital, and the city of David in Chiriquí. Its 5G pilot ran in 2024 on the 3.5 GHz band, under a temporary permit from ASEP. Commercial 5G followed on 11 October 2024 at 366 sites in Panama City. That first phase reused spectrum already carrying 4G and depended on the 4G core, a non-standalone design. +Móvil’s 5G page now lists coverage in Panama City, San Miguelito, Arraiján, La Chorrera, David and Colón.

Subscribers and coverage

ASEP’s indicator tables do not break the mobile market down by operator. Liberty Latin America counted 1,991,100 mobile subscribers at C&W Panama on 31 December 2025, with 1,533,600 on prepaid and 457,500 on postpaid. For all networks together, ASEP gives mobile coverage of 96% of the population in each year from 2020 to 2024. Its figure for territorial coverage was 38% from 2020 to 2022 and 68% in 2023, with the same 68% estimated for 2024.

eSIM and registration

+Móvil says eSIM is open to all its prepaid and postpaid mobile customers whose phone supports it. A +Móvil representative sets up the eSIM with the line’s number and plan, then hands over a small card with a printed QR code to scan. Since 15 November 2023, ASEP’s Resolution AN No. 18397-Telco of 26 April 2023 has required every mobile concessionaire in Panama to record the user’s identity before a prepaid line is activated.
