An eSIM needs a phone that takes one and is unlocked, not tied to the carrier that sold it. The phone check tells you whether yours does.

How your eSIM works on this trip, and where to find help.

The numbers below come from ENACOM, Argentina’s communications regulator, from the competition authority, and from América Móvil’s reports and Claro’s own pages, with the date of each.

Who owns Claro?

Claro’s network in Argentina belongs to AMX Argentina S.A., the company that bid for and won 5G spectrum in October 2023. In América Móvil’s list of subsidiaries at September 2026, the group holds 100% of Claro’s mobile and fixed business in the country.

Claro’s share of mobile lines

In its June 2026 ruling on Telecom’s purchase of Telefónica, the competition authority gave Claro 41.8% of the national mobile market. It also worked out that Telecom with Movistar would reach 58% against Claro’s 42%, which would leave two networks in the market.

América Móvil counted 26.7 million Claro mobile subscribers in Argentina at the end of September 2026: about 10.6 million postpaid and 16.1 million prepaid. A year earlier the base stood at 27.1 million. In the second quarter of 2026 Claro disconnected 1.5 million prepaid lines in a cleanup of its base and ended with a net loss of 1.3 million; in the third it added 318 thousand, 126 thousand of them postpaid. For scale, ENACOM counted 64.28 million mobile accesses across all networks in June 2025, up from 62.71 million at the end of 2023.

A later start on 4G

At the end of January 2015, when Movistar and Personal were already selling 4G, Claro was still building its network before launching. In February 2015 it said it had about 70 4G sites, aimed for 800 by June in Greater Buenos Aires, Rosario, Córdoba and Mendoza, and planned to start promoting the service in June.

5G on 3.3 to 3.4 GHz

AMX Argentina won lot 1 of the 5G auction, from 3,300 to 3,400 MHz, for US$350.052 million. In August 2024 Claro was the one operator of the three that had not yet begun its 5G rollout, and it signed with Nokia to build the first phase in the main cities. By November 2025 it reported 668 active 5G sites, and it offers 5G fixed wireless internet in places its 5G covers. ENACOM counted almost 1,200 5G sites across all networks by June 2025.

Claro’s 5G page says the service comes at no extra cost. To use it you need to be in a 5G coverage zone, with a 5G phone and the right network setting on it.

eSIM on Claro lines

Claro’s guide of 3 September 2026 explains the switch from a physical chip to eSIM: in Mi Claro, pick the line, open Mi SIM, choose eSIM and enter the phone’s IMEI. The number and its services stay the same, because only the format of the SIM changes. Claro advises a Wi-Fi connection, with the physical chip left active until the installation ends.

Registration for visitors

ENACOM requires each mobile line to have a named holder. A foreign visitor without an Argentine DNI registers with a passport or a valid travel document and declares the length of the stay. Under Resolution 263/2023, once that period runs out the line can reach only the operator’s customer service and the emergency numbers, until the holder confirms the registration and a new period.
